About the site

OpenHangul is a free Korean learning site run by OPENBLOG. It offers 82 lessons and a 1-year plan in 21 languages so that foreigners can read Hangeul and speak Korean on their own.

Lesson writing standards

  • Grammar, spelling and pronunciation follow the Korean language norms of the National Institute of Korean Language (Hangeul Spelling Rules, Standard Pronunciation Rules, Romanization of Korean).
  • We wrote the explanations and examples ourselves, and we do not copy sentences from public institutions' textbooks. Materials from institutions are given only as links.
  • The lesson texts were written in English and translated into other languages. If any translation sounds awkward, please let us know.
  • We also explain when expressions like casual speech and abbreviations would be rude to use.

Teacher characters and illustrations

Ms. Hana, Mr. Gaon, Professor Hangyeol and Narae are fictional characters, and their pictures were made with AI (Higgsfield). The "Beauty and Warmth of Korea" photos are freely licensed photos from Wikimedia Commons (public domain, CC0, CC BY, CC BY-SA), and the author and license are shown for each photo. A few scenes with no Commons photo were made with AI and are labeled as such.

Listen to pronunciation

Pronunciation audio uses your device's Korean text-to-speech (TTS) voice. If your device has no Korean voice, the sound may seem unnatural.
