Stroke order rules

  1. 1. Write from top to bottom.

With several horizontal strokes, start with the top one.

  2. 2. Write from left to right.

With several vertical strokes, start with the left one.

  3. 3. Horizontal strokes go left → right, vertical strokes go top → bottom.

Never draw a stroke backward. Bent strokes (ㄱ·ㄴ) are written in one go.

  4. 4. ㅇ starts at the very top and goes around counterclockwise.

Don't start from the bottom or the side, and don't go clockwise.

  5. 5. The right stroke of ㅅ·ㅈ·ㅊ starts around the middle of the left stroke.

Two strokes don't start from the same point.

  6. 6. Write a syllable in this order: initial consonant → vowel → final consonant (batchim).

The final consonant (batchim) always comes last.

  7. 7. For double consonants and double final consonants, finish the left letter, then write the right one.

Don't switch back and forth between the two letters.

Common writing mistakes

  • ✗ Starting ㅇ at the bottom or going clockwise

    ○ Start at the very top and go around counterclockwise in one motion.

  • ✗ Splitting ㅁ into four strokes

    ○ ㅁ has 3 strokes: left vertical → ㄱ shape → bottom horizontal.

  • ✗ Writing ㄹ as one wavy line

    ○ ㄹ has 3 strokes: ㄱ shape → middle horizontal → ㄴ shape.

  • ✗ Starting ㅂ with a horizontal stroke

    ○ Write the two vertical strokes first, then the middle horizontal → the bottom horizontal.

  • ✗ Starting ㅓ·ㅕ with the vertical stroke

    ○ Write the short horizontal stroke first and the long vertical stroke last. (For ㅏ·ㅑ, the vertical stroke comes first.)

  • ✗ Starting ㅗ·ㅛ with the horizontal stroke

    ○ Write the short vertical stroke first and the long horizontal stroke last. (For ㅜ·ㅠ, the horizontal stroke comes first.)

When writing fast by hand, ㅈ·ㅊ·ㅎ may look a little different. This page follows the standard stroke order taught in Korean elementary school textbooks.
