Family 가족

Korean family words depend on who is speaking. A man calls his older brother 형 and his older sister 누나, while a woman calls her older brother 오빠 and her older sister 언니. There are also different words for relatives on the father's side and the mother's side, such as 고모 (father's sister) and 이모 (mother's sister). Koreans often use family words for people outside the family too: a friendly shop owner may be called 이모, and a woman may call a slightly older man she is close to 오빠. Use 아버지 and 어머니 in formal situations and 아빠 and 엄마 at home. Learn these words and you will understand family conversations in dramas and daily life much better.
