Many of my foreign friends started Korean because of K-dramas! Dramas are great for listening practice. But characters often use 반말 and strong emotions. Let's learn the common phrases and how to use them safely in real life.
Drama Korean vs real-life Korean
In dramas, most emotional scenes happen between lovers, family members or close friends. That's why you hear a lot of 반말 (casual speech). In real life, you should use these casual forms only with close friends of the same age or younger, your partner, or family members you are close to.
For people you don't know well, older people, teachers and coworkers, add -요 or use the polite form. In this lesson, every phrase comes with its polite version, so you can choose.
Caring phrases
- 괜찮아? [괜차나?] gwaenchana? Are you okay? Polite: 괜찮아요? or 괜찮으세요? (to someone older).
- 미안해. mianhae. I'm sorry. Polite: 미안해요. Very polite: 죄송합니다.
- 고마워. gomawo. Thank you. Polite: 고마워요 or 감사합니다.
- 보고 싶어. [보고 시퍼.] bogo sipeo. I miss you. Literally "I want to see you." Polite: 보고 싶어요. Used for partners, family and close friends.
- 잘 자. jal ja. Good night. / Sleep well. Polite: 잘 자요. To an older person: 안녕히 주무세요.
- 수고했어. [수고해써.] sugohaesseo. Good work. / You worked hard. Polite: 수고했어요. To someone older or a boss, say 수고하셨습니다 instead.
Strong emotions
- 가지 마. gaji ma. Don't go. A classic scene! Polite: 가지 마세요.
- 어떻게 이럴 수가…. [어떠케 이럴 쑤가….] eotteoke ireol suga…. How could this happen…? / How could you…? Shock or deep disappointment. Sounds dramatic in normal life, so people sometimes say it as a joke.
- 정신 차려! jeongsin charyeo! Pull yourself together! / Wake up! Said to someone who is confused, fainting, or making bad choices. It can sound strong, so use it only with close people.
- 뭐라고? mworago? What did you say?! Can be shock or anger. Polite: 뭐라고요? To ask someone to repeat politely, say 네? or 다시 한번 말씀해 주시겠어요?
- 아니거든! anigeodeun! No, it's not! / That's not true! Childish, stubborn denial between friends or siblings. Never to older people.
Careful with 뭐라고? and 아니거든! In dramas they're cute or exciting. But if you say 뭐라고? to a shop worker, it sounds angry! Use 네? when you didn't hear something.

Cheering phrases
- 화이팅! hwaiting! You can do it! / Go for it! From English "fighting." The standard spelling recommended by the National Institute of Korean Language is 파이팅, but 화이팅 is also very common in daily life.
- 파이팅! paiting! You can do it! Same meaning. Fine with almost anyone, even teachers and coworkers, because it's a cheer, not a sentence.
- 힘내! himnae! Cheer up! / Stay strong! Polite: 힘내요 or 힘내세요.
- 할 수 있어! [할 쑤 이써!] hal su isseo! You can do it! Polite: 할 수 있어요!

Watching dramas to learn
Listen for endings. Notice when characters use -요 and when they don't. It tells you about their relationship: who is older, who is the boss, who is close.
Watch the change. A big moment in many dramas is when two characters stop using -요 with each other. It shows they've become close.
Don't copy angry lines. Dramas have arguments with strong words. Using them in real life can surprise or hurt people. Learn to understand them, but speak with kind, polite phrases.
