Sound Changes I: Nasalization and ㄹ Assimilation
Learn nasalization (국물 [궁물], 합니다 [함니다]) and ㄹ assimilation (신라 [실라], 종로 [종노]), the sound changes you hear every day.
What you will learn in this lesson
- Change ㄱ ㄷ ㅂ sounds to ㅇ ㄴ ㅁ before ㄴ and ㅁ
- Say 합니다 and 입니다 the natural way
- Change ㄹ to ㄴ after ㅁ and ㅇ (종로 [종노])
- Turn ㄴ + ㄹ into [ㄹㄹ] (신라 [실라])
Hello! In the last lesson a consonant met a vowel. Today two consonants meet each other. Sometimes they do not get along, so one of them changes. Take your time, and listen to how smooth it becomes.
Why sounds change
Some consonant pairs are hard to say one after the other. For example, try saying 국 and then 물 quickly: 국물 (soup). Your tongue must make a hard stop for ㄱ and then immediately switch to a nasal sound for ㅁ. Korean solves this by making the first sound nasal too: [궁물]. This kind of change is called 비음화, nasalization.
The spelling never changes. You still write 국물. Only the pronunciation adapts. These changes are not slang or lazy speech. They are part of the Standard Pronunciation, and every Korean speaker makes them, including news readers.
Air goes through the nose. When ㄴ or ㅁ follows, the sound before it often becomes nasal too.
Lips closed, air through the nose.
Back of the tongue up, air through the nose.
ㄹ is the letter that changes most often in this lesson: it can become [ㄴ], and it can turn ㄴ into [ㄹ].
Nasalization: the stops become nasals
| Final sound | Before ㄴ or ㅁ becomes | Example | Pronounced |
|---|---|---|---|
| [ㄱ] (ㄱ ㅋ ㄲ …) | [ㅇ] | 국물 | [궁물] |
| [ㄷ] (ㄷ ㅅ ㅆ ㅈ ㅊ ㅌ ㅎ) | [ㄴ] | 거짓말 | [거진말] |
| [ㅂ] (ㅂ ㅍ …) | [ㅁ] | 합니다 | [함니다] |
Each stop changes to the nasal made in the same place in the mouth.
The pattern is logical
Look at the table again. ㄱ and ㅇ are both made at the back of the mouth. ㄷ and ㄴ are both made with the tongue tip. ㅂ and ㅁ are both made with the lips. So the mouth stays in the same place and only lets air through the nose.
Remember that this works on the final sound, not the letter. 꽃 is said [꼳], so in 꽃말 (the meaning of a flower) the [ㄷ] becomes [ㄴ]: [꼰말]. 있는 is [읻] + 는, so it becomes [인는]. Always ask yourself first: which of the seven sounds is this batchim?

ㄹ becomes ㄴ after ㅁ and ㅇ
ㄹ does not follow ㅁ or ㅇ easily. When ㄹ comes right after a final ㅁ or ㅇ, it is pronounced [ㄴ]. A famous example is the Seoul street and area name 종로, which is said [종노]. Others are 음료 (drink) [음뇨] and 정류장 (bus stop) [정뉴장].
This can join with nasalization. In 국립 (national), the ㄹ after ㄱ becomes [ㄴ], and then that new ㄴ makes the ㄱ nasal: [궁닙]. The same happens in 협력 (cooperation) [혐녁] and 독립 (independence) [동닙].
ㄹ pronounced as ㄴ
- 종로 [종노] jongno Jongno (an area in Seoul)
- 음료 [음뇨] eumnyo drink, beverage
- 정류장 [정뉴장] jeongnyujang bus stop
- 대통령 [대통녕] daetongnyeong president
- 심리 [심니] simni psychology, state of mind
- 국립 [궁닙] gungnip national (run by the state)
- 협력 [혐녁] hyeomnyeok cooperation
ㄹ assimilation: ㄴ becomes ㄹ
When ㄴ and ㄹ meet, in either order, the ㄴ usually becomes [ㄹ], and you hear a long [ㄹㄹ], a clear double l. This is called 유음화, ㄹ assimilation.
ㄴ + ㄹ: 신라 (Silla, an ancient Korean kingdom) is [실라]. 연락 (contact) is [열락]. 한라산 (Hallasan, the mountain on Jeju Island) is [할라산].
ㄹ + ㄴ: 설날 (Lunar New Year) is [설랄]. 물냉면 (cold buckwheat noodles in broth) is [물랭면].
There are a few words, mostly long compounds where a word is joined to a suffix like 량 (amount) or 란 (column), where ㄹ becomes [ㄴ] instead: 생산량 (amount produced) is [생산냥]. These are less common. If a word looks unusual, check its pronunciation in the dictionary.
ㄹㄹ examples
- 신라 [실라] silla Silla (ancient kingdom)
- 연락 [열락] yeollak contact, getting in touch
- 편리해요 [펼리해요] pyeollihaeyo It’s convenient.
- 설날 [설랄] seollal Lunar New Year
- 물냉면 [물랭면] mullaengmyeon cold noodles in broth
- 한라산 [할라산] hallasan Hallasan (mountain)
Which change is it?
- 종로 jongno Jongno ㅇ + ㄹ → [ㅇㄴ]: [종노].
- 신라 silla Silla ㄴ + ㄹ → [ㄹㄹ]: [실라].
- 국물 gungmul soup, broth [ㄱ] + ㅁ → [ㅇㅁ]: [궁물].
- 국립 gungnip national Two changes: ㄹ → [ㄴ], then ㄱ → [ㅇ]: [궁닙].

Key points
- Before ㄴ or ㅁ, the final sounds [ㄱ] [ㄷ] [ㅂ] become [ㅇ] [ㄴ] [ㅁ] (국물 [궁물], 합니다 [함니다]).
- Work from the final sound, not the letter (꽃말 [꼰말], 있는 [인는]).
- ㄹ after ㅁ or ㅇ is said [ㄴ] (종로 [종노], 음료 [음뇨]).
- After ㄱ or ㅂ, ㄹ becomes [ㄴ] and then the stop becomes nasal (국립 [궁닙]).
- ㄴ and ㄹ together usually become [ㄹㄹ] (신라 [실라], 설날 [설랄]).
