Have You Ever…?: -아/어 본 적이 있어요

Talk about life experiences with -아/어 본 적이 있어요/없어요 and -(으)ㄴ 적이 있어요, and suggest trying things with -아/어 보세요.

What you will learn in this lesson

  • Ask and answer 'Have you ever…?' questions
  • Build -아/어 본 적이 있다 from any verb, including irregulars
  • Know when to drop 보다 and use -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다
  • Use -아/어 보다 for 'try doing' in other tenses
Mr. Gaon

Hello! Today we talk about experiences. 'Have you ever eaten 떡볶이?' 'Have you ever been to Jeju?' These questions are perfect for making friends, so this lesson is both useful and fun.

Two building blocks

The experience pattern is made of two pieces you may already know.

1. -아/어 보다 = to try doing. 보다 means 'to see', but after another verb it means 'to try something and see what it is like'. 입어 보다 = try on, 먹어 보다 = try eating, 해 보다 = try doing.

2. -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다/없다 = there is/isn’t a time when I did. 적 means 'a time, an occasion'. -(으)ㄴ is the past modifier you learned in the modifiers lesson.

Put them together: 먹어 보다 + -ㄴ 적이 있다 → 먹어 본 적이 있다, 'to have tried eating, to have eaten before'.

V + -아/어 본 적이 있어요/없어요

I have (never) tried… / I have (never)… before

  • Only with verbs. Adjectives cannot take -아/어 보다.
  • Use the same -아/어 rule as the polite present: ㅏ/ㅗ → -아 본, other vowels → -어 본, 하다 → 해 본.
  • Vowels merge as usual: 오다 → 와 본, 마시다 → 마셔 본, 배우다 → 배워 본.
  • Irregulars follow their -아/어 form: 듣다 → 들어 본, 돕다 → 도와 본, 짓다 → 지어 본, 부르다 → 불러 본, 쓰다 → 써 본.
  • Ask with 있어요? and answer with 있어요 or 없어요. The tense is normally present (있어요), because you have the experience now.
  • 제주도에 가 본 적이 있어요? [제주도에 가 본 저기 이써요] jejudoe ga bon jeogi isseoyo?
Have you ever been to Jeju Island?
  • 네, 작년에 한 번 가 봤어요. ne, jangnyeone han beon ga bwasseoyo.
Yes, I went there once last year.
  • 아니요, 아직 가 본 적이 없어요. [아니요 아직 가 본 저기 업써요] aniyo, ajik ga bon jeogi eopseoyo.
No, I have never been there yet.

With 보다 itself, Koreans usually just say 본 적이 있어요 ('I have seen'), not 봐 본 적이 있어요.

Mr. Gaon

A nice tip: 한 번도 means 'not even once'. It makes a strong negative: 한 번도 못 가 봤어요 or 한 번도 가 본 적이 없어요. And 몇 번 means 'a few times': 몇 번 먹어 봤어요.
