Can and Can’t: -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요/없어요

Say what you can and can’t do with -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요/없어요, including irregular verbs, and talk about skills and possibilities.

What you will learn in this lesson

  • Make -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요/없어요 from any verb
  • Conjugate irregular verbs: 듣다, 돕다, 만들다, 살다
  • Talk about skills with 잘해요, 못해요 and -(으)ㄹ 줄 알아요
  • Ask whether something is possible: 카드로 결제할 수 있어요?
Mr. Gaon

Hello! Today’s lesson is about ability and possibility: "I can swim", "You can’t park here", "Can I pay by card?". If you studied the future tense, you already know half of this rule.

The idea: "there is a way"

In -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요, the word 수 means something like "a way" or "a means". So 갈 수 있어요 is literally "there is a way to go", which means "I can go". 갈 수 없어요 means "there is no way to go", so "I can’t go".

The first part, -(으)ㄹ, is the same as in the future -(으)ㄹ 거예요. If you can make 갈 거예요 and 먹을 거예요, you can make 갈 수 있어요 and 먹을 수 있어요.

Pronunciation tip: after the ㄹ, 수 sounds tense, like [쑤]. 갈 수 있어요 is pronounced [갈 쑤 이써요].

Verb stem + -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요 / 없어요

can / cannot (ability or possibility)

  • Vowel stem → -ㄹ 수 있어요: 가다 → 갈 수 있어요, 하다 → 할 수 있어요.
  • Consonant stem → -
  • Past: 갈 수 있었어요 (I could go), 갈 수 없었어요 (I couldn’t go).
  • 저는 한글을 읽을 수 있어요. [저는 한그를 일글 쑤 이써요] jeoneun hangeureul ilgeul su isseoyo.
    I can read Hangul.

The irregular changes are exactly the same as in -(으)ㄹ 거예요.

Mr. Gaon

Notice how the ㄹ verbs behave: 살 수 있어요, not 살을 수 있어요. If the stem already has ㄹ at the bottom, it is ready. Nothing more to add.

못 vs -(으)ㄹ 수 없어요

I can’t swim. Short and common in conversation.
  • 수영할 수 없어요. suyeonghal su eopseoyo.
I can’t swim. Same basic meaning. Slightly more formal or careful; also good for rules and conditions.
  • 여기에서 수영할 수 없어요. yeogieseo suyeonghal su eopseoyo.
Swimming is not possible/allowed here. For rules and situations, -(으)ㄹ 수 없어요 sounds very natural.

Talking about skills

For skills, Koreans also use two other expressions.

잘해요 / 못해요 (to be good at / to be bad at): 노래를 잘해요 (She sings well). 저는 요리를 못해요 (I’m bad at cooking). Here 못해요 is written as one word because it means "to be poor at". Many people say 잘 못해요 to sound modest: 한국어를 잘 못해요 (I don’t speak Korean well).

-(으)ㄹ 줄 알아요 / 몰라요 (to know how to): 운전할 줄 알아요 (I know how to drive). 자전거를 탈 줄 몰라요 (I don’t know how to ride a bike). This focuses on a learned skill.

When someone compliments your Korean with 한국어 잘하시네요!, a modest answer is 아직 잘 못해요 or 아니에요, 아직 많이 배워야 돼요.
